Ford introduced the 4th generation F-Series in 1961, which was sleeker and wider than its predecessor. Also introduced was the "unibody" which derived from the fact that the cab and the box are one continuous piece. Ford referred to them as the "integrated pick-up" but the one-piece body was set atop a traditional frame-style chassis, making the unibody more similar to a body-on-frame car. Reasons for the unibody are cost, packaging, and promotion. The unibody truck required fewer stampings, fewer welds and a less complicated path through the assembly plant's paint shop.
